Earlier last month, I was invited to give a keynote speech on global food security at the First Brussels High Level Lecture on Food Security and Development, in Belgium. This first of its kind event was organized by the Centre for Institutions and Economic Performance (LICOS, KULeuven) and the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) with support from the European Commission (EC).

I provided an overview of the state of food security in the world, focusing on what is needed to reduce food price volatility, undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. I was followed by Dacian Ciolos, the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, who gave the second keynote speech on food security and the EC. He spoke about the new Common Agricultural Policy, and urged for better international coordination of agricultural policies.
