Feeding a Growing and Urbanizing Africa

On June 11, I was invited to speak at the 2012 US-Africa Forum, “Farming is a Business: Strengthening Linkages and Skills to Transform Africa’s Food Systems,” in Washington DC. My presentation on “Meeting the Food and Nutrition Demands of an Urbanizing Africa,” emphasized principally the need to transform smallholder farming to meet Africa’s growing food and nutrition demands. To advance this objective, it is important to invest in smallholder-friendly agricultural R&D and infrastructure; innovate in financial services, risk-management mechanisms, and institutional arrangements; and leverage smallholder production for nutrition and health outcomes. Ahead of the forum, I was also invited to write a guest blog post “Transforming Smallholders to Meet Africa’s Food and Nutrition Needs.”
