Water, energy, and food security: MOU signed with the Ministry of Water, Irrigation, and Electricity (MoWIE) of Ethiopia

It was an honor to welcome Dr. Seleshi Bekele, Minister of Water, Irrigation, and Electricity of Ethiopia, to IFPRI on January 30th to sign a memorandum of understanding between IFPRI and the Ministry.

As the global population continues to grow, demands for water, energy, and food will rapidly increase and further pressure scarce natural resources. This challenge will be especially significant in developing countries and regions with rapid economic growth, such as in Ethiopia. Ensuring food security in an environmentally sustainable manner will be critical for all, and collaboration among relevant stakeholders will be key.

In this light, IFPRI and the Ministry of Water, Irrigation, and Electricity of Ethiopia have agreed to promote collaborative research, capacity strengthening, and communications activities, focusing on issues including the water-energy-food nexus, climate resilience to achieve the SDGs, irrigation development, and energy modeling.

I look forward to our close collaboration for a food-secure and sustainable future in Ethiopia and beyond.
